FEFLOW 2015 Conference wraps up successfully in Berlin

The go-to conference for groundwater modellers worldwide concluded with great success end September in Berlin, Germany.

Titled FEFLOW 2015 Conference - Modelling the World of Groundwater with MIKE Powered by DHI, the conference is held once every three years. This year’s session was attended by close to 100 groundwater experts: consultants, researchers and engineers from private sectors and government agencies around the world.

The event was a gem for industry experts interested in keeping up-to-date with the current topics of groundwater modelling, learning about new FEFLOW applications, and building and expanding their network. The conference was headed by seven globally renowned keynote speakers, and experienced FEFLOW users also presented and shared their modelling knowledge.

Our FEFLOW development and customer care team, as well as business development and solutions staff from different offices of DHI-WASY, along with selected MIKE representatives were present at the event.

DHI’s Head of FEFLOW Development and Scientific Director, Groundwater Modelling Centre, Fabien Joel Cornaton presented the features of the upcoming FEFLOW 7.0. A live demo by FEFLOW Consultant and Acting Head of Support, Carlos A. Rivera Villarreyes and FEFLOW developer Erik McCurdy followed his presentation.

We held an honorary session on day 1 of the conference for Professor Hans-Jörg Diersch, the original developer and ‘father’ of FEFLOW, who retired earlier this year. The organising committee also gave out awards for the best poster and oral presentations.

Not just a conference

It was not all work and no play. FEFLOW 2015 was indeed an all-rounded event. Prior to the actual conference on 21-23 September, we scheduled a field trip to the Lusatian mining district where participants got an insight into water management and reclamation for large-scale lignite mines, provided first-hand by the experts of the mining company Vattenfall and DHI. The field trip was complemented by a relaxing punt boat trip and a microbrewery visit. An extensive training and workshop programme on 17-19 September and 24-25 September respectively also provided the opportunity for novice and experience FEFLOW users to polish their modelling skills.

‘DHI created an ambience that made participants comfortable to exchange ideas and information about their work. The seminar was really well organised. Lunch and refreshments were really good. The boat trip was more than welcome. It was a perfect conference – nothing more I could ask for!’

We would like to thank all keynote speakers, presenters and attendees for making FEFLOW 2015 a successful and memorable event. It is you and your very positive feedback that have proven that all the hours put into preparing and organising the conference have been well spent. We look forward to seeing you at our next FEFLOW conference!
